OTTAWA-
A House of Commons committee will hold a special meeting this morning to discuss Canada’s controversial decision to ship repaired parts of a Russian gas pipeline back to Germany.
The Liberal government is facing mounting pressure over its decision to exempt six Siemens Energy turbines, which were serviced in Montreal, from the economic sanctions it imposed on Russia following its invasion of Ukraine.
Russian state energy company Gazprom cut gas deliveries by 60% last month from its Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline, which connects northeastern Germany, citing technical problems with the turbines.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said the decision to deliver the turbines was made so Canada could support European allies facing energy crises as Russia restricts access to its oil and gas supplies.
Conservative and New Democrat MPs called the meeting of the House of Commons Foreign Affairs and International Development Committee to raise their request for an export study.
The Ukrainian Canadian Congress called such a meeting earlier this week, and the Ukrainian World Congress is asking the Federal Court to uphold the sanctions regime and halt the expedition.
