Canada wins women’s 4x400m relay gold after England are disqualified

Canada clinched relay gold in the women’s 4 x 400m at the Commonwealth Games on Sunday after England crossed the finish line first but were disqualified for a lane violation.

With Jessie Knight as moderator, the England team believed they had won after a photo finish by a thousandth of a second over Canada’s Kyra Constantine.

Victoria Ohuruogu, Jodie Williams and Ama Pipi joined Knight in celebrating at Alexander Stadium, believing England had won their eighth track and field gold at those games.

However, the judges later discovered that William’s foot went over the lane during the first exchange with Ohuruogu, and disqualified the team.

Canada was promoted to gold while Jamaica won silver and Scotland bronze.
