UK summons Chinese ambassador for ‘aggressive’ Taiwan escalation

LONDON: British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss summoned Chinese Ambassador to Britain Zheng Zeguang on Wednesday (August 10) to explain Beijing’s actions towards Taiwan following the visit of the Speaker of the House of States States, Nancy Pelosi.

A furious China has extended its biggest-ever drills around the self-governing island it claims as its own after Pelosi’s visit – the highest-level trip to the island by a US official in decades.

“I have asked officials to summon the Chinese ambassador to explain his country’s actions. We have seen increasingly aggressive behavior and rhetoric from Beijing in recent months, which threatens peace and stability in the region,” Truss said in a statement.

“The UK urges China to resolve any disputes by peaceful means, without the threat or use of force or coercion.”
