Carreno Busta beats Hurkacz for first Masters 1000 title

Pablo Carreno Busta bounced back from a deficit to defeat Hubert Hurkacz 3-6 6-3 6-3 in Montreal to clinch the biggest title of his career at Sunday’s Canadian Masters.

The unseeded Spaniard jumped for joy as he broke the eighth-seeded pole to seal victory in front of a packed house.

“Please don’t wake me up when I’m dreaming, because I enjoy it very much,” said Carreno Busta during the award ceremony.

The defining moment came in the deciding set when Carreno Busta took a 2-1 lead after a drop shot from Hurkacz failed to clear the net. Hurkacz responded by bouncing his racquet off the court in frustration.

The point of the game came in the sixth game of the third set when Carreno Busta sped down a deep lob and hit it over his head to extend the point, which he eventually won with a bouncing backhand volley at the net.
