Newcastle and Leeds advance in the League Cup

MANCHESTER, England: Premier League clubs Newcastle United and Leeds United prevailed on Wednesday with victories over lower division opponents to secure their places in the third round of the League Cup.

Newcastle had to fight back from falling behind to beat fourth division (League Two) side Tranmere Rovers, who had put Elliott Nevitt ahead in the 24th minute.

Jamaal Lascelles leveled Eddie Howe’s side with a shot from close range before the break and New Zealand striker Chris Wood struck a superbly executed corner from Kieran Trippier to seal a 2-1 win in the 52nd minute.

Leeds also had a scare before beating Yorkshire neighbors Barnsley 3-1.

A Louis Sinisterra strike from 20 yards put Leeds on track before Mateusz Klich doubled the advantage from the penalty spot.

A Mads Andersen header gave Barnsley hope and they could have equalized from the penalty spot but Callum Styles hit the post.

Klich secured victory with a flick in the 56th minute.

Premier League Brighton & Hove Albion won 3-0 at League One Forest Green Rovers while Championship (second division) Bristol City won 3-1 at League One Wycombe Wanderers.
