Ricky Martin sues nephew for extortion on baseless charge

Martin’s lawsuit follows a legal battle in July in which a San Juan judge issued a protective order for the artist’s nephew after reporting him for harassment, a claim Martin has denied and rejected.

At a July 21 hearing, a judge ruled not to extend the temporary protective order against Martin, as his nephew asked to drop the case. After the hearing, Puerto Rico police said the protective order issued against Martin would be filed because there was nothing criminal pending, CNN reported.

In the lawsuit filed Wednesday, Martin sought financial compensation totaling at least $30 million, alleging that Sánchez’s actions caused the cancellation of “million-dollar contracts and artistic projects present and future”.

“The financial damages caused as a result of these actions are quantified at a sum of no less than $10 million,” it says. The court document further states that the situation caused “damage to the reputation of the plaintiff, who, until the order of protection was made public, enjoyed an impeccable reputation acquired through his long artistic career and altruistic for the nearly 40 last years of his life.”

CNN has repeatedly attempted to contact legal representation for Sánchez for comment.

These reputational damages are quantified “for a sum of at least 20 million US dollars”, the lawsuit states. Martin is claiming the damages, interest, costs and attorney’s fees claimed.
