Accession of King Charles III to Canada, United Kingdom, in pictures

King Charles III was officially proclaimed monarch on Saturday in Canada and the United Kingdom, days after the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, at the age of 96.

Joined by his wife Camilla, the Queen Consort, as well as his eldest son and heir apparent Prince William, the King took part in an official accession ceremony at St. James’s Palace in London, the first time since 1952 when Queen Elizabeth I took the throne.

The Queen died at Balmoral Castle in Scotland on Thursday after a 70-year reign, the longest of any British monarch.

In Canada, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Governor General Mary Simon attended an accession ceremony at Rideau Hall in Ottawa, the official residence of the Governor General of Canada. The federal government is planning a series of events to commemorate the Queen’s legacy.

Here’s what the ceremonies looked like in Canada and the UK.
