The USA retained their title and won the 11th FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup after beating China 83-61 in Sydney on Saturday.
The Americans upped the ante in the second quarter, going into the break with a 43-33 lead and eventually claiming their fourth straight title.
A’Ja Wilson – who was named tournament MVP – scored 19 points and Chelsea Gray 10 points as the pair led the way for the favorites in front of nearly 16,000 fans at the Sydney Superdome.
The Americans had impressed across the board in Australia, breaking numerous records en route to the final and deserved winners.
On Monday, the team set a record tally in their 145-69 win over Korea, and the USA’s 83-43 win over Canada gave them the biggest semifinal lead.
According to the organizers, 145,519 fans attended the tournament – the highest attendance in the history of the competition.
In the day’s other game, Australian GM Lauren Jackson scored 30 points as the Opals beat Canada 95-65 in the third-place playoff.
