Cricket-Stoinis says Australia need to apply pressure after defeat

(Reuters) – Australia all-rounder Marcus Stoinis said the Twenty20 world champions were in pain after an 89-run humiliation by New Zealand in their Super 12 stage battle on Saturday, but he backed the hosts to feed off the pressure and that to reach the semifinals. Final.

The result at Sydney Cricket Ground has boosted Australia’s net run rate, which is used to separate teams tied on points in the standings, and left them almost certainly needing four Group 2 wins to finish last to reach four.

“After that, there was a bit of pain in the dressing room,” Stoinis told reporters. “It’s the first game of the World Cup and if we take care of the rest, everything should be fine.

“It leaves us in a position where other people could be in control. But if we go ahead and we’ve only lost one game and don’t make it, I think we can probably be okay with that to some extent.

“But now the next focus is on Sri Lanka.”

Stoinis said Tuesday’s game against the Asian nation was a chance for his team to put things right.

“We’re happy to do that,” said Stoinis. “We know we performed under pressure. We know that with our backs to the wall, we can do what we want.

“We trust ourselves and we trust each other. Sometimes the environment helps create a bit of that. And it’s ironic, but we still feed on it and joke about it and upset each other about it. Hope we are fine. “
