Soccer-Arsenal leads the WSL with a 2-0 win over Liverpool

(Reuters) – Midfielders Lia Waelti and Frida Maanum both scored in the first half as Arsenal clinched a 2-0 away win over newly promoted Liverpool on Sunday to take the lead in the women’s Super League.

Waelti opened the scoring for Arsenal in the 15th minute when he made a save from a corner and shot into the net, and Maanum made it 2-0 with a powerful run and finish seven minutes later.

Liverpool had their fair share of chances from set pieces, with Ireland defender Niamh Fahey coming close with a header from a corner in the second half and a shot just wide a minute later.

Ultimately, however, the Reds remained without a goal for the third league game in a row.

The win lifts Arsenal, who have yet to concede a league goal this season, back to the top of the table on 12 points after four games. Former leaders Manchester United meet bottom Leicester City later on Sunday.

On Saturday, Jamaican striker Khadija Shaw struck both sides of the break to help Manchester City to a comfortable 3-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur, while Lucy Graham’s goal just before the hour gave Everton a 1-0 win at Aston Villa .
