ATP roundup: Stan Wawrinka annoys Daniil Medvedev in Metz


Stan Wawrinka pulled off an impressive upset on Thursday as he defeated top seed Daniil Medvedev 6-4 6-7(7) 6-3 to advance to the quarter-finals of the Moselle Open in Metz, France.

The 37-year-old Swiss improved to 2-2 all-time against former world No. 1 Russia Medvedev, who had nine aces but was injured by 12 double faults. Next, Wawrinka meets Sweden’s Mikael Ymer, who beat France’s Gregoire Barrere 6-4, 6-3.

Second-seeded Hubert Hurkacz of Poland defeated Austria’s Dominic Thiem 6-3, 6-4, while fourth-seeded Holger Rune led 6-4, 4-1 when Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi retired with a knee injury .

Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech defeated fifth-seeded Nikoloz Basilashvili 7-6 (11), 6-3 and won the tiebreak in the first set with his sixth set point. Alexander Bublik (No. 7) from Kazakhstan and Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego also recorded victories.

San Diego open

Runner-up Jenson Brooksby won a Northern California Natives matchup, defeating Mackenzie McDonald 6-4 3-6 6-2 to advance to the quarterfinals in San Diego.

Elsewhere in the second round, top seed Daniel Evans of Great Britain defeated Japan’s Taro Daniel 6-4, 6-4. Colombia’s Daniel Elahi Galan came from behind to beat fourth-placed Spain’s Pedro Martinez 5-7, 6-1, 6-4. France’s Constant Lestienne defeated sixth-placed Chilean Alejandro Tabilo 6-1, 6-3, and Brandon Nakashima defeated fellow American Denis Kudla 6-3, 6-4.
