Canadians at Wimbledon: Andreescu, Shapovalov eliminated in Round 2

LONDON –

Canadians Bianca Andreescu and Denis Shapovalov were both eliminated from Wimbledon after losing in the second round at the All England Tennis Club on Thursday.

Andreescu of Missisauga, Ontario fell 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) to Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan while Shapovalov of Richmond Hill, Ontario lost 6-2, 4-6, 6-0. 1, 7:6 (8:6) against the American Brandon Nakashima on Thursday.

Rybakina fired four aces at Andreescu’s two and converted on three of four break points.

Rybakina also won 80 percent of her points on first serve, while Andreescu won 65 percent of her points.

“I didn’t expect her serve to be that good…she played well and she got a lot of balls. She was pretty solid on both sides. She played a really great match,” said Andreescu.

23-year-old Rybakina, seeded 17th in the women’s draw, next meets 19-year-old China’s Qinwen Zheng in the third round of the tournament.

Andreescu, 22, reached the second round at the All England Tennis Club for the first time in her career after edging past American Emina Bektas 6-1, 6-3 in Tuesday’s opener.

Shapovalov, seeded 13th in the men’s draw, committed eight double faults in his loss to Nakashima.

Shapovalov, 23, reached the semi-finals at the All England Club last year, his best result at a Grand Slam tournament.

20-year-old Nakashima, who is ranked No. 56 in the world, next meets Daniel Elahi Galan. The Colombian advanced to the third round when Roberto Bautista Agut withdrew from the tournament after testing positive for COVID-19.

Ottawa’s Gabriela Dabrowski, the only Canadian left at Wimbledon, will feature in tomorrow’s second round doubles draw. Dabrowski and partner Giuliana Olmos of Mexico, No. 3 of the tournament, meet Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine and Tereza Martincova of the Czech Republic.

Dabrowski and Olmos defeated the duo of Yanina Wickmayer from Belgium and Yulia Putintseva from Kazakhstan 6-7, 6-3 and 6-2 in their first-round match on Thursday.
