De Grasse leads Canada to relay gold at World Championships

The Canadian men’s 4x100m relay is gold at the World Athletics Championships.

Six-time Olympic champion Andre De Grasse led a team of Aaron Brown, Jerome Blake and Brendon Rodney to victory on Saturday in a time of 37.48 seconds, the world’s fastest this season.

The gold was Canada’s third medal at World Championships.

The Americans took silver in 37.55, with Great Britain third (37.83).

The win was a great ending for De Grasse, who contracted COVID-19 a month ago and didn’t qualify for the 100m final. He also retired from the 200 meters.

It also comes after some near misses by the Canadian team. De Grasse led the Canadians to silver at the Tokyo Olympics last summer and bronze in Rio 2016 and bronze at the 2015 World Championships in Beijing. Canada didn’t make it to the finals at the last World Championships in Doha in 2019.

Led by Donovan Bailey, Canada won 4×100 gold at the 1995 and 1997 World Championships. That team included Glenroy Gilbert, who is now the head coach of Athletics Canada.
