Dominant Newcastle spoils Forest’s top return

Newcastle United started the new season in comfort thanks to goals from Fabian Schar and Callum Wilson in Saturday’s 2-0 win against Nottingham Forest and gave the visitors an unfortunate return to the Premier League after a 23-year absence.

Newcastle took the lead through the unlikely goalscorer when Schar centre-back flew off the edge of the box just before the hour mark.

With 12 minutes left, Forest’s Brandon Williams gave the ball away and Allan Saint-Maximin rolled it down the left to Joelinton. The Brazilian crossed to Wilson, who looped the ball over goalkeeper Dean Henderson with a deft finish.

Forest had a whiff of goal towards the end of the opening period with new signing Jesse Lingard but faced a severe reality check on their return to the top flight and failed to register a shot on goal.
