Knife Attacks in Saskatchewan: Federal Government Provides Funding

The federal government has promised support for Saskatchewan’s James Smith Cree First Nation following a massive stabbing attack, but what does that look like?

Indigenous Services Minister Patty Hajdu told Evan Solomon on CTV News Channel’s Power Play on Tuesday that the government could cover expenses related to funeral costs, transportation for family members and mental health services.

“I have reassured, formally and informally, all leaders that the government will be there to pay for these expenses,” she said.

Solomon asked Hajdu about the funding and timing of the new legislative framework for Indigenous policing. The National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls made these two recommendations in 2019.

Hajdu told Solomon she looks forward to working with Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino to co-develop this legislation.
