Premier League asks referees panel to review VAR calls at Chelsea and Newcastle


The Premier League has asked refereeing body PGMOL to review video assistant referee (VAR) decisions in Chelsea’s 2-1 win over West Ham United and Newcastle United’s goalless draw with Crystal Palace, British media reported on Sunday.

Chelsea came from behind to beat West Ham at Stamford Bridge on Saturday after a 90th-minute attempt by Maxwel Cornet was ruled out for the visitors after the VAR ruled Jarrod Bowen had fouled Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy would have.

In the game at St James’ Park, Newcastle thought they had taken the lead six minutes into the second half through a Tyrick Mitchell own goal, but it was ruled out after a VAR check revealed Joe Willock had fouled Vicente Guaita .

West Ham manager David Moyes described the decision as “ridiculously bad” and Newcastle manager Howe said his team scored a “perfectly good goal”.
