Tories to announce next leader ‘with revised programme’ reflecting Queen’s death

The Conservative Party says the event announcing the next leader scheduled for Saturday will go ahead as planned, but in a more low-key manner.

The Queen’s death has prompted the party to rethink the event, given how it will fall during the official mourning period.

After learning of his death, the chairman of the Conservative leadership election organizing committee said he would look for ways to announce the results in a respectful manner.

In a brief statement today, committee chair Ian Brodie confirmed the event in Ottawa will take place on Saturday, but “with a revised schedule” that reflects the death.

It now plans to open with a tribute to the Queen and chopped parts of the event that gave it a festive feel, like confetti.

The party was selling $150 tickets to attend, with members starting to arrive from different parts of the country.
