Ziyech back in Morocco squad for Chile, Paraguay friendlies

Moroccan winger Hakim Ziyech has been included in the squad for the friendlies against Chile and Paraguay by new coach Walid Regragui, potentially ending a 15-month absence from the team and giving the country a timely boost ahead of the World Cup.

The 29-year-old Chelsea player, a talisman for the national team, could feature in their first games under Regragui on 23 September in Barcelona against Chile and four days later in Seville against Paraguay.

Ziyech has fallen out with former coach Vahid Halilhodzic, who was sacked in August after months of tensions with the Football Association over player selection and particularly his frosty relationship with the striker.

Last year Halilhodzic accused Ziyech of faking an injury to miss mid-year friendlies and left him out of World Cup qualifiers and the Africa Cup of Nations finals.

Ziyech then refused to play under the coach but after winning the battle of willpower he is now back in the herd.

There is also a return to the squad for Bayern Munich defender Noussair Mazraoui, who has not played for Morocco since October 2020 after also falling out with Halilhodzic.

Former Germany U21 midfielder Abdelhamid Sabiri, without cap, has been called up, as has Bari-born striker Walid Cheddira from Italy.

Morocco were drawn in Group F at the World Cup with Belgium, Canada and Croatia.
