Analysis: “She-Hulk: Lawyer” wants to court your interests

Or so I tell myself as I wait for delicious takeaways to help me write this newsletter.

A girl has to eat, so grab something to snack on and join me for this week’s Pop Life roundup.

It’s easy to get bored with single life these days, because it’s tough on these dating streets. And a career in the courtroom isn’t soothing either.

But when Jennifer Walters – played by Tatiana Maslany in this new Marvel series – gets angry, it’s different.
In “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law,” Walters, a single thirty-something superhero lawyer, deals with the stressors in her personal and professional life — as well as those that come with, you know, being a 6-foot-7 green Superhuman.

“She-Hulk” is streaming now on Disney+.

Don’t bother “Game of Thrones” fans on Sunday.

That’s because it marks the start of “House of the Dragon,” a long-awaited prequel to the infamous fantasy series – and the anticipation has been palpable.
Based on the novel “Fire & Blood” by George RR Martin, the new series tells an older story, set 200 years before the events of “Game of Thrones” and centering on the history of House Targaryen. Expect your timeline to be flooded with reviews, spoilers, and Daenerys reaction GIFs.

You can watch it on HBO and HBO Max (which is owned by CNN parent company Warner Bros. Discovery).

“Bad Sisters”

(Left to right) Sarah Greene, Sharon Horgan and Eve Hewson are shown in a scene from "Bad Sisters" on AppleTV+.

If a dark, heart-pounding comedy is your cup of tea, this is for you.

The titular ‘Bad Sisters’ here are the five Garvey siblings, bonded by childhood trauma – and a vow to care for each other amid an inquest into the death of one of their husbands.

Based on the Flemish series “Clan”, the acting is top notch and the scenery in Ireland is to die for. See what I just did there?

The first two episodes of the limited series debut are now streaming on Apple TV+.

Two things to listen to

Demi Lovato is seen at "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" on July 14 in Los Angeles.

“Holy Fvck”, Demi Lovato has new music coming out.

The singer, who recently shared that she’s reverting to using her pronouns in addition to them, is releasing her eighth studio album. It seems super personal.
“The process of creating this album has been the most fulfilling to date, and I’m grateful to my fans and collaborators for taking this journey with me. I’ve never been more confident in myself and my music, and this record speaks for itself,” Lovato said in a statement. “To my Lovatics who have been with me since the beginning and to those who have just accompanied me, thank you. This record is for you.”

The 16-track album is now out.

Brendon Urie (center) of Panic! at the Disco performs onstage during the 2019 Billboard Music Awards at MGM Grand Garden Arena on May 1, 2019 in Las Vegas.

Let’s go dancing.

Panic! at the Disco has been giving us joy for years, and this latest album is no different.

“Viva Las Vengeance” was released on Friday, with the title paying homage to the act’s beginnings as a Las Vegas pop rock quartet.

Today, it’s frontman Brendon Urie’s solo project, but the jams of Panic! always move the fans.

“‘Viva Las Vengeance’ is a throwback to who I was 17 years ago and who I am now with the affection I didn’t have before,” Urie said in a statement. “There was something about the tape recorder that kept me honest.”

“Viva Las Vengeance” debuted on Friday.

Something to talk about

(L-R) Jessica Clarke and Ben Higgins attend the 2019 iHeartRadio Music Festival at T-Mobile Arena on September 20, 2019 in Las Vegas.

“When are you going to have a baby?”

Newlyweds can tell you that this is a question that can sometimes arise right from the wedding reception and is not always welcome.

More often than not, it’s a question directed at women, so it was nice to see former “Bachelor” Ben Higgins having to grapple with curiosity about when he and his wife, Jessica Clarke, plan to start a family during a recent interview.

“I believe that, God willing, we will have children,” Higgins, who married Clarke in November 2021, recently told E! New. “But right now it’s not a conversation we have often and it’s not something that I don’t think any of us fancy. You know, you hear ‘baby fever’, I don’t know if any of us have baby fever right now.”

Plus, he said, they’re already raising a puppy. As a dog parent, I know how hard it can be – kids grow up and eventually become independent, but dogs never do.

something to sip

Diane Keaton attends her hand and footprints ceremony hosted by TCL Chinese Theater on August 11 in Hollywood, California.

Leave it to the brilliant Diane Keaton to bring us what is essentially “13 Going on 30” for the Instagram era.

The 76-year-old actor stars alongside Elizabeth Lail, along with Taylour Paige, Loretta Devine, Lois Smith and “Schitt’s Creek” alum Dustin Milligan, among others, in the new comedy “Mack & Rita.”

Lail plays Mack, a 30-year-old influencer who feels like an old soul. Naturally, she finds herself in the body of her eldest, Rita, played by Keaton.

No matter what you think of the film’s concept, I find it delightful that Keaton continues to work on projects as varied as movies, animated TV series, and a Justin Bieber music video.

Much has been made of how Hollywood celebrates youth, sometimes to the detriment – and erasure – of older performers. But with Keaton and projects like “Mack & Rita,” it’s easy to see why the “coastal grandma” aesthetic took hold.
