MLB round-up: Rising of the Watchers turns Mariners upside down


Jose Ramirez’s RBI doubled an eighth inning with three runs as the Cleveland Guardians earned a 4-3 win in Seattle on Saturday, the night Ichiro Suzuki was inducted into the Mariners’ Hall of Fame.

Brandon Nimmo hit a leadoff homer and four New York pitchers combined a five-hitter on the fade while visiting Colorado.

David Peterson (7-3) allowed four hits over six innings for the Mets, who won the first three games of the four-game series. Nimmo, who hit Kyle Freeland’s second pitch from behind the right midfield fence, drove on a double in another run and walked and also scored.

Freeland (7-9) allowed two runs with four hits and a walk while striking out two over five innings. The Rockies have lost 10 of their last 13 games.

Red Sox 5, Rays 1

Rich Hill hit 11 batters in seven shutout innings and Boston scored four goals in the first inning of a win over the Tampa Bay visit.

Hill (6-5) was the first Red Sox pitcher to knock out up to 11 batters in a game at age 40 or older. The 42-year-old southpaw allowed just three hits and a walk as he went seven innings for the first time this season.

Tommy Pham and Alex Verdugo each had two hits and one run as Boston won its second installment of the three-game series.

Phillies 6, Pirates 0

JT Realmuto hit a three-run double and Kyle Gibson threw seven scoreless innings to lead surging Philadelphia to a win over visiting Pittsburgh.

Nick Castellanos hit a homer to put the third inning ahead, and Rhys Hoskins and Alec Bohm hit one run each for the Phillies, who took an early 6-0 lead in the second game in a row. Bryce Harper reached base three times (once, two intentional walks) and scored a run in his second game since missing about two months with a broken left thumb.

Tyler Beede (1-4) hit six carries with five hits in three innings to level the loss for the Pirates in his third straight game.

Athletics 3, Yankees 2 (11 innings)

Shea Langeliers raced home from second base due to a throwing error by DJ LeMahieu with two outs in the 11th inning, allowing host Oakland to defeat New York.

The Yankees finished with just one hit. Her winning streak ended at five while it was Oakland’s third walk-off win in the last eight days. After Jonathan India was flown out, Kyle Farmer scored with a single and Donovan Solano with a double ahead of Friedl’s exploits. Two batters to Friedl’s second blast of the season, homer by Colin Moran to extend the lead to 5-1.

Friedl went 3-for-4 and Farmer also hit a homer for the Reds, who have gone on to win back-to-back after a four-game slack.

Diamondbacks 10, White Sox 5

Carson Kelly and Geraldo Perdomo each had three runs, Jake McCarthy had four hits and scored three runs, and Merrill Kelly threw in the eighth inning to lead the Arizona visit to a win over struggling Chicago.

Arizona won for the third time in four games and sent Chicago to their eighth loss in their last 10. The White Sox drew to 7-5 in the eighth inning and put the tie on the plate before Daulton Varsho caught an Eloy Jimenez bat on the Warning track to end the threat.

Merrill Kelly (11-5) allowed four runs with five hits in 7 1/3 innings with one walk and seven strikeouts.

Padres 4, Royals 3

Yu Darvish survived a shaky first inning and then drove on as San Diego defeated host Kansas City for a second straight game.

Darvish (11-7) pinned the second- and third-place runners with an out in the first inning, then left the second- and third-place runners with two outs in the second before finding his groove. He allowed three runs with five hits in seven innings while walking two and striking out six.

The Royals loaded the bases in the first inning with an out on Darvish. Hunter Dozier lined a single to the right and scored for Bobby Witt Jr. Nick Pratto then lined a double off the center wall for Salvador Perez and Ryan O’Hearn.

Orioles 3, Astros 1

Dean Kremer recorded a career-best 7 2/3 innings while Anthony Santander and Austin Hays both hit homers in the third inning as Baltimore secured a series win over host Houston.

Kremer (6-4) dominated throughout while recording his second straight start in which he allowed just one run. He was perfect through three innings and faced the minimum through six.

Astros right-hander Jose Urquidy (12-5) allowed four hits, three runs and three walks while fanning out five over five innings.

Cardinals 6, Braves 5

Tyler O’Neill’s walk-off lifted St. Louis beyond his Atlanta visit.

The Cardinals completed their comeback from a 4-0 deficit by scoring two runs in the ninth inning against Braves closer Kenley Jansen (5-1).

Brendan Donovan hit a one-out double and finished third on a wild pitch. Jansen went to Paul Goldschmidt and beat Nolan Arenado to load the bases. Corey Dickerson tied the game with an RBI infield single before O’Neill went five fields.

Brewers 7, Cubs 0

Christian Yelich’s three-run homer highlighted a four-run seventh inning that helped Milwaukee end a three-game losing streak with a shutout of the Chicago visit.

Starting pitchers, Milwaukee’s Brandon Woodruff and Chicago’s Drew Smyly, largely dominated before leaving after six innings each. Woodruff provided four of the Cubs’ five hits and hit 10 with a 97-pitch walk. Smyly, meanwhile, gave up five hits and gave up a base on balls and recorded two strikeouts on 86 pitches.
