“It had rained at sunset every day of the week. Everyone was worried about the heat, the aptly named ‘love bugs’, details, guests all arriving on time, etc. – without talk about the thunder and lightning that came at nearly the right time each day at the exact time the ceremony was scheduled to begin that Saturday,” Lopez wrote. “Oh, and we all got a stomach bug and recovered until late in the week, that, and with a few other unexpected setbacks, had all the makings of a wedding weekend doozie .”
But like a page torn from one of his romantic comedies, it all worked out.
“At six forty-five on Saturday August 20, the sun broke free and cast its rays like little diamonds dancing on the river behind the makeshift altar in our garden,” she wrote. “The sky was a clear blue, and distant clouds of pure white held firm in the sky. As the sun set behind the living oak trees draped in Spanish moss, a warm breeze swept across the lawn where sat our closest family and friends and, in the long run – finally I started my walk up the stairs that would become the driveway that would lead me to the rest of my life.”
The couple first met in December 2001 on the set of the movie “Gigli”, where they played criminals stuck in a job together, and the couple struck up a real friendship. In November 2002, the two were engaged, but postponed their wedding until September 2003 citing “excessive media attention” surrounding their pending nuptials.
They never made it down the aisle and officially called off their engagement in January 2004.
They reunited romantically nearly 17 years later.
“Years ago we had no idea that the road ahead would involve navigating so many labyrinths and holding so many surprises, blessings and delights. It all culminated in this moment, one of the most perfect moments of our lives,” Lopez wrote. “We couldn’t have been happier. Wishing you all the same kind of happiness…the hard-earned kind that’s all the sweeter for the journey that preceded it.”
