Sources say Tory leader Pierre Poilievre has named former MP Tony Clement to the board of the federal party’s main fundraising arm.
Multiple sources have confirmed Clement’s nomination to The Canadian Press, following Poilievre’s landslide victory in the leadership election this weekend.
Poilievre is set to install some of his own picks for key party posts as he moves into the office of Leader of the Opposition.
Clement was a former cabinet minister under Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper and recently raised money for Poilievre during his successful leadership race.
In 2018, then-party leader Andrew Scheer asked Clement to leave caucus after being made aware of allegations of sexual impropriety against the former MP.
The allegations came shortly after Clement admitted to sending sexually explicit images and a video to someone he thought was a consenting woman – an interaction that turned out to be an attempt at extortion.
Clement referred questions about his Conservative Fund Canada nomination to a party spokesperson, who did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
