Chennai Open: Bouchard leaves the game with an injury

Eugenie Bouchard left her doubles semi-final with an injury, while Rebecca Marino was eliminated in the quarter-finals of Friday’s singles draw at the Chennai Open tennis tournament.

Westmount, Que.’s Bouchard and Belgium partner Yanina Wickmayer trailed Russia’s Anna Blinkova and Georgia’s Natela Dzalamidze 3-6 and 1-1 when Bouchard retired due to an unknown injury.

The doubles competition began minutes after Bouchard lost 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 to Argentina’s Nadia Podoroska in a match that lasted two hours and 24 minutes.

Bouchard returned to the game last month after a 17-month layoff due to a right shoulder injury that required surgery.

Blinkova and Dzalamidze meet the winner of a semi-final on Saturday between top seeded Ottawa’s Gabriela Dabrowski and Brazil’s Luisa Stefani and the duo of Thailand’s Peangtarn Plipuech and Japan’s Moyuka Uchijima for the doubles title.

Later on Thursday, seventh seed Marino of Vancouver lost their quarterfinal match at the WTA 250 event 7-6 (10), 6-3 to third seed Magda Linette of Poland.

Marino wanted to reach the semifinals of a WTA tournament for the second time in her career. In February 2011, she reached the finals of the Cellular South Cup in Memphis, Tennessee.
