Robert Lewandowski: Star from Barcelona and Poland wears the Ukrainian armband at the World Cup

During an event at Warsaw’s Stadion Narodowy on Tuesday, the two famous strikers embraced as Shevchenko fastened the blue and yellow armband to Lewandowski’s arm.

“I’m very proud because I know what it means to support the Ukrainian people,” Lewandowski said.

“I know what it means to fight for freedom, we know the history, our history, and that’s why it was clear to help our neighbors, to help the people from Ukraine, and I’m very proud to wear this armband wear and be on it I am very happy and very thankful for everything.”

As neighboring countries, there are strong ties and a shared history between Ukraine and Poland, which has hosted more than a million Ukrainian refugees fleeing the Russian invasion since February, according to UNHCR.

Lewandowski has long been a supporter of Ukraine, urging Poland to boycott the World Cup qualifier against Russia just days after the war began.

When playing for Bayern Munich, the Poland captain wore a Ukrainian armband while his team-mates wore black armbands to commemorate those killed in the war.

“First of all, I want to thank Robert for everything he has done for my country,” Shevchenko said. “And I give him this armband: This armband represents pride, power, a certain connection with Ukraine.”

Football has gained prominence in Ukraine in recent months.

The Ukrainian Premier League resumed last month for the first time since February’s Russian invasion in the shadow of air raid sirens – a game in Lviv was suspended four times, allowing players to find shelter in a bunker – while the Ukraine national team was thanked by Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelenskyy for “two hours of happiness” after beating Scotland to reach World Cup qualifiers playoff final.

“I think as athletes we have a very strong voice to tell people the truth, to keep the awareness of what’s going on in Ukraine and to tell the truth about it,” Shevchenko added.

"please don't forget us" says Ukrainian soccer legend Andriy Shevchenko on the ongoing war effort
Alongside tennis star Elina Svitolina, Shevchenko has served as an ambassador for UNITED24, an organization founded by Zelensky that directs nearly $186 million in donations to the war effort.

“I know when I wear this armband for the first time,” Lewandowski said, “when some people hear about what I’ve done, it’s going to be an amazing feeling for me too, an amazing time because I know this sport – people too.” Look at football and other sports, for example – and if they know what’s going on, it will be easier to understand the situation.”

Next, Lewandowski will appear on the field with Poland in a Nations League game against the Netherlands on Thursday night.
