Arsenal beat Tottenham 4-0 as the game set a new attendance record in the Women’s Super League

The attendance record was another significant development in a record-breaking year for women’s football, which also saw attendance records at the Women’s European Championships and Women’s Champions League.

Arsenal put on a show for all 47,367 fans at Emirates Stadium from the start, with a goal for Beth Mead after just five minutes before Vivianne Miedema scored two more goals on either side of Raffaele Souza’s header to end the defeat.

“First of all, thank you to the fans for coming. We put on a show and I hope they enjoyed it,” Arsenal captain Kim Little told the BBC.

“You are so aware of it that you can hear it now. It makes a big difference and over the summer the English girls felt that. I’m just happy that we were able to show a performance.”

Little had helped score Arsenal’s first goal when he found Mead unmarked on the edge of the box.

Although her first attempt rebounded to her, the Euros Golden Boot winner made no mistake on her second attempt.

Arsenal’s power kept Tottenham in their own half for much of the first half and Spurs were unable to capitalize on a rare opportunity in the 38th minute as Celin Bizet Ildhusoy failed to fool Gunners goalkeeper Manuela Zinsberger.

Arsenal doubled their lead in just five minutes when Spurs conceded the ball just outside their own penalty area, to the delight of Miedema, who pounced on the loose ball and flicked it past back-kicking goalkeeper Becky Spencer.

The Gunners’ dominance continued after half-time when Souza used a corner to head the ball into the net.

Once again, the red and white flags unfurled on either side of the gate, waving from side to side as if leading the crowd in their celebrations.

The next cheer came from off the field as the record-breaking attendance was officially announced, surpassing the previous record of 38,262 set at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in 2019.

And there was still time for more celebrations as Miedema headed her second goal of the afternoon into the box from a Steph Catley cross.

Vivianne Miedema's second goal completed Arsenal's victory.

Those four goals sealed Arsenal’s tenth consecutive WSL win and continued their record of a WSL clean sheet since March 6.
