Another day, another fun food hack from TikTok! The platform’s latest culinary craze? Spaghetti with pancakes.
What is Spaghetti with Pancakes? thereou ask. It’s little more than pancake batter flowing over a griddle in long, thin strips that are actually more comparable to linguini, judging by a viral video posted by Briana Archuleta.
Archuleta credits her husband with inventing the “delicious” dish, which he also calls “scribble cakes”.
In the video, which racks up 8.4 million views in a week, strands of Pancake Spaghetti are pulled together, placed in a bowl of pasta (like a nest of, yes, spaghetti), sprinkled with powdered sugar, generously drizzled with syrup and then taste with a turn of the fork.
TikTok commenters are super creative.
“What, I’m very impressed and need to make this for my family of pancake and spaghetti lovers,” one wrote.
“Okay your husband is a genius!!!!” cried another.
“My whole life is a lie, CAN YOU DO THAT?!? I want my childhood back NOW!” yelled a third.
Before trying it out ourselves — which, as fans of innovative breakfasts, we’re definitely planning on doing — we thought we’d check with Food Network recipe developer Amanda Neal for her thoughts.
Neal told us she recommends putting the batter in a piping bag, squeeze bottle, or even a resealable bag with the end cut off. “The key is a small hole, so you can make thin lines of dough,” she says.
Because the dough is channeled in very long strips, Neal says it can be difficult to turn it over. “So I would suggest running thin lines and making sure they’re not too thick, so the ‘noodles’ can cook through without needing to flip them,” she adds.
A nonstick griddle is best, or if you don’t have one, a large nonstick skillet, Neal says, so you have room to squeeze out those long “noodles.” She also advises melting some butter on the griddle or skillet to add flavor and a golden color, as Archuleta showed her husband in the video. And Neal notes that it’s best to cook on a low heat, to prevent the noodles from burning before they’re cooked.
Neal also suggests getting a little creative with the recipe. “One of the fun things about this hack is that you can really use any pancake batter,” she says. “Try chocolate, red velvet or banana pancake batter. Everything you and your family prefer.
She loves the idea of topping spaghetti pancakes with icing sugar, as Archuleta’s husband demonstrated in the TikTok video — and she approves of the syrup drizzle. (Hot maple syrup would be his preference.) And for a little more zhuzh? Try a cinnamon sugar dusting, Neal advises, “for something extra.”
It’s not that Pancake Spaghetti isn’t a little extra as it is – in the best possible way.
