Andrew Wiggins signs a four-year extension with Warriors

SAN FRANCISCO –

Forward Andrew Wiggins signed a four-year contract extension with the Golden State Warriors on Saturday, keeping a key starter for the defending champion.

The team announced their commitment.

The 27-year-old Wiggins, who was an All-Star for the first time last season, made the playoffs for the second time in his eight-year career and often took on a difficult defensive role to help the Warriors win their fourth championship in eight seasons.

He averaged 17.2 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.04 steals in 31.9 minutes over 73 games and all began to bring the Warriors back to the 2021 play-in round after losing to lead the playoffs.

“Andrew has been a great fit for our team since arriving in the Bay Area nearly three years ago,” said General Manager Bob Myers. “His first-ever championship last season earned him the admiration of many in the league and cemented his stature as an influential two-way player in the NBA. We look forward to having him as part of our team for the next few years.”

Golden State acquired Wiggins in a trade from Minnesota before the February 2020 deadline and he quickly found his way alongside Stephen Curry and Draymond Green – he no longer had to be the face of a franchise like he was with the Timberwolves. It wasn’t until last season that Wiggins was finally able to play with Klay Thompson, who missed more than 2 1/2 years with two serious injuries that required surgery.

Additionally, guard Jordan Poole was close to completing a four-year extension, said a person with direct knowledge of the situation. Poole’s deal was due to be finalized on Sunday.

The Warriors open the season with a ring ceremony and a home game against the Lakers Tuesday night.
