Emergencies Act: Acting Ottawa Police Chief to Testify

OTTAWA-

The Emergency Public Order Commission resumes public hearings today, with Acting Ottawa Police Chief Steve Bell expected to testify.

Bell is a veteran of the force and was deputy chief when the “Freedom Convoy” protests swept through Ottawa in late January.

He has been the city’s acting leader since the resignation of Peter Sloly in mid-February.

Bell had previously said it had not asked the federal government to invoke the Emergencies Act.

Sloly is also expected to testify this week before the commission, which is examining whether Ottawa was justified in invoking the law.

Last week, the Ottawa Police Services Board announced that it had chosen a new police chief who will take office on November 17, despite the city council election taking place today.
